Future Legends Trip Mentawai
A real fairy tail surftrip for gromms
Once again Star Koat hosted the Future Legends high performance surf camp for kids in the Mentawai Islands receiving onboard five young talents hungry for empty barrels and big ramps to land new tricks.
With the mission of coaching those kids and pushing their surf to another level, was Dylan Longbottom and the super coach Robbie Sherwell.
Leading the pack of grommets was Kian Martin from Indonesia. Only 13 years of age on his fifth Mentawai Season, he showed a lot experience, inspiring the other kids. On their second Future Legends trip, was Logan Steinwede and Summa Longbottom. Summa once again charged the waves fearless, leaving her dad and the boys stunned with her surf. Chae Conti and Ned Hart completed the team of young surfers.
With all the group together and ready for departure, Bruno Veiga, the surf guide onboard, injected an extra dose of frothiness to the trip announcing a promising forecast ahead. Bruno planned the route with maestri, the trip unfolded in an epic way, and the kids surfed different conditions every day, starting with fun waves at Burger World but aiming to challenge the grommets at HT’s during the swell.
For sure every surfer dreams about surfing perfect Maccas, but they were all pinching themselves in the boat after a full day surfing one of the best waves in the world by themselves. The kids were in heaven! Kian, on his favourite waves as he says and Logan scored at least 50 barrels each, but Chae Conti enchanted everyone on board, surfing with a graceful style, tearing apart every section of the waves.
Just like a fairy tale, the best was saved till last, the search paid off with Hollow Trees delivering epic surfing conditions. The Future Legends once again didn’t shine away from the challenge. After a intense 10-day coaching program, they faced the solid swell full of confidence, providing a barrel show to their parents and photographers on the channel.
All the kids surfed above everyones expectation. The surprise came from Ned Hart, the youngest onboard, only 9yrs old. Originally from Yallinup W.A., Ned paddle out as a grown man dropping into some bombs to score what he is calling the best barrel of his life… (so far!)
We couldn’t finish the story without expressing how thankful we are to everyone involved on this project. In particular our team of photographers, Bruno Veiga and Bernard Obeid working alongside our invited camera men, Steven Conti and Jackson Steinwede, that captured all the action images to maximise the surf training program and the lifestyle onboard, illustrating this epic adventure. Looking forward to our next FUTURE LEGENDS TRIP.
